Description

Twelve sherds of an incomplete recessed wall tile, perhaps for holding a candle. Rectangular border containing a niche with a ridged back wall, semicircular at its base. Border contains an applied zigzag and dot decoration. Border and interior of niche covered in dark green glaze. Some remains of mortar on reverse and on sides of border.

Description (Physical description)
Recessed wall tile, perhaps for holding a candle. Rectangular with flat ends and semi-circular section. Top of rim decorated with applied chevron and dot ornament. Rim and interior covered in dark green glaze; ends and back unglazed reddish brick.

Description (Physical description)
Knocker, G. M. (1956): 'Rectangular vessel with rounded base and flat ends, 6 3/4 inches wide and approximately 11 inches long with a depth of 2 3/4 inches. A rim 1 inch wide decorated with applied zig zag and dots runs round the vessel, the inside being ridged. The vessel is made of close red paste, with ends and base unglazed. The rim and inside carry dark olive-green glaze of good quality. This object is probably an Elizabethan wall tile meant to hold a candle. (Fig. 8(i)). (Fig. 10.8).'
