Description (Physical description)
Described by Faye Minter, Jude Plouviez, Ian Riddler, Nicola Trzaska-Nartowski and Rose Broadley, and informed by Sue Anderson, on their visit on 25/11/2019: 'Four copper alloy sheet fragments. The largest has a row of small repousse bosses along one edge, and continuing (but folded over) around the corner. All fragments more than 20mm so most likely to be from copper alloy vessels, the one with repousse bosses likely to be from a a bead-rimmed bowl, as other Lackford examples and Spong Hill inhumation 24. There are at least three examples from Spong, they occur on the continent and have been interpreted as imports when found in A-S graves historically, however metal anaylsis may indicate that some are of local manufacture. In the Rhineland this vessel form is dated to AD 460/80-610/20, Koch records them as numerous in the 5th century and widespread in the 6th. English examples range in 6th, late 5th and 7th century in date (Hills and Lucy 2013, 83-84, fig 2.27, 1871/1)..at least three examples from Spong, they occur on the continent and have been interpreted as imports when found in A-S graves historically, however metal anaylsis may indicate that some are of local manufacture.
