Context (Amendments / updates)
When 1906.71 and 1906.72 were accessioned into the collection, the findspot was listed as Lakenheath, Suffolk. However, the Accession Register entries for both objects was amended by Mary Cra'ster to note that: 'Letter from to W.G. Clarke states that these in fact come from CRANWICH, Norfolk, & probably formed part of a hoard, also containing 2 socketed axes, (a ring & a brooch?).' Lakenheath was probably given originally as the findspot because that was where G.P. Gathercole, who purchased the hoard from Cawston and sold it to the museum, was based.

Context (Found together / assemblage)
In his letter dated 4/11/1906 (see above), S.G. Cawston implies, but does not explicitly state, that the palstave (1906.71) and the casting jet (1906.72) were found together or at least in the same field. He goes on to note that two other bronze axes were found in the same field as were a bronze brooch a small ring; the current location for all these finds is unknown. Two bronze ingots (1906.73 A-B) were at one point claimed to be part of the (putative) hoard, but this was apparently in error; they are not noted by Cawston as part of the finds.
