Description (Physical description)
Description for Z 16494[.1-2]: 'Sword blade fragments.'
Event Date
Author: maa
Context (Found together / assemblage)
According to 'Archaeological Notes', the spearhead fragment (1932.217), the shield boss (1932.218) and two sword fragments (Z 16494.1-2) were 'dredged from the Cam near Clayhithe' although they were 'not, of course, necessarily associated' (p. 167). While the spearhead fragment and shield boss were purchased for the museum, the 'sword fragments are temporarily on loan in the museum'. It is not clear who they were loaned from, or when they were gifted.

Context (Analysis)
Lethbridge and O'Reilly note that the sword fragments 'evidently belong to two weapons of different periods': the hilt fragment being Anglo Saxon and the point fragment being being 'a weapon of the Viking period or to a foreign Teutonic blade of the early Migration period' (p. 167)
