Description

A very large leather jug known as a 'blackjack', made of stitched air-dried cowhide and waterproofed with a pitch-based mixture both inside and out. It has a flat bottom made form a separate piece of leather, a moulded body with slightly tapered neck and a handle on one side. Seven fragments of internal pitch are detached but present.

Context (Analysis)
This jug is similar to others in the Museum's collections (e.g. 1925.416), though is of far greater size. Indeed, it appears to be much larger than others found online, both amongst other museums' collections and those for sale through antiques dealers. National Museums of Scotland hold a specimen of very similar form (online ID: 000-100-002-786-C), dated to the 17th or 18th century. As such, the Period field for this object has been updated from 'Post Medieval' to 'Post Medieval; ?17th century; ?18th century'.
