Description

Cast copper alloy brooch of the Hod Hill type, possibly silvered or tinned. Upper bow with fluted top and three transverse ridges, below which is a panel made of nicked ridges on either edge and a zig zag central line with a nicked ridge on either side; lower bow decorated with ridges and a small footknob; catchplate with drilled hole; axis bar and upper portion of pin present.

Santon Hoard. Originally thought to have been found at Santon Downham, Suffolk but research by Rainbird Clarke quoted by Spratling shows it was found in the parish of Santon, on breckland close to the Thetford boundary, between the east end of the former Half-Moon Plantation and the site of St Helen' s Oratory (TL52 837873).

Description (Physical description)
A cast bronze brooch of the Hod Hill type with only part of the pin remaining. The bow is heavily decorated with fluted top above three transverse ridges, below which is a panel made of nicked ridges on either edge and a zig zag central line with a nicked ridge on either side. the catch plate has one central perforation and there are traces of tin-plating.

The original Spratling MGS number associated with this object was found to be from the earlier, 1966, iteration of his unpublished thesis, Spratling MGS 18. The updated, 2009, Spratling number is Spratling MGS 19 and this has now been added in the Other numbers field (see Context: References).
