Description

Iron key with kidney shaped bow featuring an internal basal cusp; globular collar flanked top and bottom by two raised transverse ridges; solid cylindrical stem with globular terminal beyond bit; square bit formed from two mirrored wards separated by a vertical cleft with circular cut-out near stem; upper portion of bit has an ‘L’ shaped cross section; below this are two mirrored ‘S’ shaped ward with a downward facing semi-circular plate on their lower edges.

Previously mounted on plain paper-wrapped display board with numerous hand-written inscriptions. On the rear of the board, a rectangular hand-written display label (previously attached to the front) reads: '18th century. Iron key.' In pencil another hand has added to the label: 'English. Cambridge. Mr. C. Wallis, Mar. 16.1916.' A second large hand-written label adhered to the rear of the board reads: 'Key. Cambridge. Presented by C. Wallis. March 15th 1916. On the front of the board pencil handwriting notes: 1916. Iron key. 18th century Cambridge. Mr. C. Wallis.'
