Context (Related Documents)
Catalogue card for 1927.1678 contains the following lengthy entry: 'The history of this site is given by the donor as follows: ' July 1914: skeletons and potsherds (this beaker) found by workmen (digging in a gravel pit on the site) in a large hole covered by a stone. December 1914: skeletons found, one having on its chest the axe hammer and ?spindle (1927.1679 A-B): skeletons were lying on the gravel at a depth of 3-4 feet. The workmen, on being questioned, stated that they frequently found human bones in this gravel pit, at least eleven jaws having been found. Autumn 1926: a skeleton was found accompanied by the Beaker (1927.1681): this was reburied by the Coroner' s order but recovered through Mr. J. P. Smith of Ely. This site was, therefore, evidently a considerable cemetery in the Beaker Period and probably continued in use in to the Bronze Age, as the perforated axe is of a Bronze Age rather than of a Beaker Period type.'
