Description

Iron sword with an asymmetrical pointed oval pommel, tapered tang and slightly angular shoulders. Tapered cross-guard with a rectangular cross-section; blade tapers to a point with a wide fuller down the length of the blade. Blade is inscribed with in iron letters; obverse reads 'CONSTAINUS', reverse reads 'INONINEDNI'. Large portion of the blade has come away and is missing at the cross-guard end of the blade.

In his 1994 edition of 'The Sword in the Age of Chivalry', Oakeshott identifies this sword as Type X, and dates it to the second half of the 10th century. As this is the most recent assessment, the Period field has been updated with this date.
