Description

Large, single-handed iron sword with an ‘S’ shaped cross-guard and faceted pear-shaped pommel; type XX. Double-edged blade features a full-length taper and a single, broad fuller along half its length; the blade features a stamped maker’s mark at the tip of the fuller, partially infilled with copper alloy inlay. The cross-guard features a simple écusson with a central cusp flanked either side by a transverse groove; the flattened quillions have an ‘S’ shaped twist in plane with the blade. The tang is short and rectangular in plan and cross-section; the sides taper slightly towards the pommel; a fragment of the wooden grip remains adhered to one side of tang; on the reverse side of tang is a maker’s mark in the form of a mullet above three balls. The octagonal, pear-shaped pommel is large and gently faceted. The blade is corroded with small areas of loss including the tip; a small amount of material adhered to the blade below the cross-guard may be extant remains of the scabbard mouth.
