Iron sword with parallel-sided blade and pointed tip, slight fuller. Petersen Type L hilt; downturned cross-guard with separate ring covering the join between the grip and the guard, flat tapering tang, tri-lobed pommel.

Context (Analysis)
In the VCH (see Bib) section on the Viking Age, T.C. Lethbridge writes that he believes it to be 'a native weapon and not one imported from Denmark or Norway', based on 'the evidence of the English ornament on the Wallingford sword'. He gives it a date of the 9th century.

Dr Sue Brunning, British Museum, wrote on 15 November 2016 that is 'it looks to be a Petersen Type L sword, which would place it in the mid-ninth to tenth centuries.' The Period and Description have been updated accordingly.
