Description
Cast gilt copper alloy square headed brooch. The rectangular headplate is decorated with Style I zoomorphic ornament in low-relief; projections around the edge of the headplate including two bird's heads in profile. Short low-arched bow with two longitudinal panels of relief ornament. The flat panel is highly decorated around a cruciform raised area. The lappets are human masks. The detached foot is formed of a human mask, flaring to a flat terminal. On the reverse, the remains of the pin bar lug are present alongside iron corrosion. The catchplate is missing. Evidence of possible historic repair with sheet metal riveted through the foot. Three fragments; two glued together, one detached but present.
