Description

Chape, probably made of silver, for a single-edged sword or dagger. Rectangular in shape with two attachment holes in the rounded end, otherwise undecorated. There appears to be a line on one side which could indicate where the silver sheet was rolled to form the chape; upper edge irregularly serrated and broken off.

Loose handwritten label reading in black ink: 'Silver(?) Chape of single-edged sword or dagger. Dredged from Old West River 40 yds below Aldreth High Bridge (found by T.C.L. 11.4.28). Has been cut from scabbard while weapon was still in it (by a flying spear?). Possibly lost in William's battle. XI century'.
