Description

Pottery cloam oven. Thick walls, brown fabric; oxidised to a deep red/orange at the front; grey underside. Stamped with eight-pointed star on all sides except bottom, and some circular impressions at the front. The roof is domed and has a straight extended back with two circular holes; scratches and deep fingernail marks across the top. The front has a large central circular hole opening into the oven; the inside of the oven has a fabric of grey and red, and uneven base.

B. Wailes research: '?Cloam oven: heated by filling the inside with burning furze etc.; this was then removed and bread inserted. Such ovens were used in Cornwall until the 1930's. Mr. Lake, of Lake's Potteries, Truro, might have further information. ?Introduced from France in the 14th to 15th centuries.'
