Context (Related Documents)
A very faded luggage tag-type label, typical of those used by Ridgeway, was previously attached to this jug by metal wire. It is now too faded to read, although it may provide the information about its discovery that was recorded on the catalogue card.

Context (Found together / assemblage)
This bottle once contained 'odds and ends of iron' and was recorded in one label as being found 'under or beside fire hearth'. A label found in 1927.1225 B appears to indicate that these two jugs were found together, but with iron contents.

Context (Analysis)
Nigel Jeffries, Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA), dates this jug to the mid- to late-17th century. It was made in Frechen, Germany as a domestic jug but the provenance and deposit suggests it was reused as a 'witch bottle'. Jeffries is part of an AHRC-funded project (AH/S002693): 'Bottles Concealed and Revealed'.
