Accession No

1921.248 A-B

Description

Two rectangular fire bricks of red fabric encased in a wooden display box held together by iron staples. Both bricks have raised borders enclosing biblical scenes or figures. The first (left, A) likely shows a scene of punishment (death by stoning) from the story of Susanna (Book of Daniel). At far left and right, male figures hold stones aloft; at centre, two bearded men (elders) kneel, their hands together, either in prayer or cuffed; to their right is a tree and a basket of stones. Badly worn, with damage at bottom left and upper right corners. The second brick (right, B) shows a man, seated and holding a stylus, surrounded by trees and accompanied by a horned animal, probably either a bull or an ox. This likely depicts Luke the Evangelist. Worn, with damage at bottom left corner. Signs of written labels once attached to front of display case, now lost.
