Accession No

D 1889.5.1

Description

Large pedimented Dutch fire brick, possibly the fireplace capstone, bearing the crowned coat of arms, the double-headed eagle, of Emperor Charles V. On both sides of the coat of arms are the columns of Hercules, held by a griffin on the left and a lion on the right. Around the columns a spell band with the inscription PLVS OLTRE, now partly chipped. In the tympanum of the pediment a portrait bust of Charles V and the year, which is now illegible apart from the first two numbers '15' due to the surface flaking off. Several chippings on the front, especially around the edges of the pediment; surface flaking off especially in the upper right corner of the front; the bottom left corner is broken off and missing at the back of the brick.

Context (Amendments / updates)
Context for D 1889.5[.1-5]: 'Large brick found, along with 12 small bricks, from this idno and from Z 28128 A. An arbitrary decision has been made on which 4 of the small ones belong to this record. This decision is based mainly on the similarity, in terms of fabric and wear, of the large brick to the smaller, since they are all said to have come from the same house and possibly the same fireplace. The other bricks have all been assigned to Z 28128 A. Two of them are of the same design as one in this collection, but appear to be older and are in poorer condition. Also in Z 28128 B is a cast which is of the same scene, containing a female figure, as one in this collection. However, bearing in mind the pattern of wear on the brick, the two do not match and the cast cannot have been made from the brick in this record.'
