Context (Related Documents)
The second card reads: 'One much worn leather shoe, line of narrow slashes across arch, upper unstitched around sole. Elizabethan leather decoration around opening of shoe. Found with other articles under the floor of a room known as the shoemaker' s room in the old court of Corpus Christi College 1852'. Evidently there is some confusion as to provenance. While this item was originally catalogued as part of the Archaeology Department's holdings, it transpires that it is stored with the Anthropology Department's holdings. I have amended the entry accordingly. M.G.A. 2 February 1989.

See diagram of artefact from front and side views on the card. The card has the following entry: 'This Elizabethan shoe was found with other articles (a-g) under a floor of the room known as the 'Shoe makers' room', in the old court of Corpus Christie College 1852'. Two cards bearing the identification number 1883.692 C have come to light. The contents of one card are transcribed above. That card also reads: 'Original CAS. 1883 List says Christ's Coll for 83.692 a-g. But appended [i.e. the second card ] is apparently original card referring to Corpus Old Court. See Babington, C. Antiquarian Communications I p. 51'.

Context (Amendments / updates)
After researching this and associated objects, suggest that 1883.692 A-F were found under the floor of the room known as the 'Shoe-maker's Room' in the Old Court of Corpus Christi College, and that 1883.692 (comb) and 1983.692 G (wood carvings) were found in a small cupboard in the Old Court with the leather objects in 1852. The Accession Register entry wrongly states the origin as Christ's College. Note with record clearly states find location as Corpus Christi College. All objects now reverted to Archaeology and index cards stored together in Arch. files.
