Description

Large wine amphora of yellow-white clay, with a rounded, elongated body that is wider at the bottom and narrower at the top. Above the shoulder is a long, narrow neck with an everted rim, with two handles, one on either side, decorated with shallow vertical grooving. There is a long tubular spike with a blunt end protruding from the base. Gallo Belgic. There are several cracks across the body that have been repaired with infill.

Found in a Belgic chieftain's grave when laying a drain. Excavated by Thomas Lethbridge on 17 May 1952. No. 2.C. Grid reference TL 52/645674.
The material seems to date just pre-Conquest, c. 40 AD.
