Description

Spun bowl in fragile condition. Base and rim intact but some of the body missing. Rivet holes 2 inches apart near the rim show where a single handle once was placed. An iron rivet remains in one of these holes.

Found in a Belgic chieftain's grave when laying a drain. Excavated by Thomas Lethbridge on 17 May 1952. No. 9. Grid reference TL 52/645674.

Description (Physical description)
Spun bowl in fragile condition. Base and rim intact but some of the body missing. Rivet holes 2 inches apart near the rim show where a single handle once was placed. An iron rivet remains in one of these holes. The rim is thickened and with a slight bevel and is grooved along the top. Adhering to the base and at one time soldered to it was a single foot of cast bronze . Inside the base is engraved a circle of herring bone ornament, 2 3/4 inches in diameter, in which is set a 13-petalled marigold with a central figure. The base has a series of engraved concentric circles.
