Description

Bell-shaped cup of terra nigra, carinated below the rim and imitating Loeschcke 7 and 8. Intact cup in good condition, barring a few chips from the rim. The stamp on the base appears to read IVLLO (=IVLIOS). Gallo Belgic.

Bell-shaped cup of terra nigra, carinated below the rim and imitating Loeschcke 7 and 8. (Compare Colchester Form 56c (pl. liii), where the range is I-IV/VI, 10-61/65.). Intact cup in good condition, barring a few chips from the rim. Gallo Belgic.

Catalogue card: 'A was dug out by workmen... Imitating Loeschcke 7 and 8. Compare Colchester Form 56 C (Pl LIII) where the range is I-IV/VI (10-61/65)... The stamp on the base appears to read IVLLO=JULIOS as at Colchester PLXLVI.96. where it has also been found on Terra Nigra Form 56 and seems to date late Augustus/Claudius... Probably A was an import.

As the catalogue card notes that this cup 'was dug out by workmen' it does not have an excavation number as the other Snailwell ceramics do. This is probably due to not being excavated by Lethbridge himself.
