Context (Analysis)
This axe was sampled as part of the Council for British Archaeology's Sub-Committee for Implement Petrology, at an unknown date. The subsequent analysis identified the stone as Group XV, micaceous sub-greywack, Coniston Grit, from southern Lake District. See report in the archive (GO1/2/2).

Context (Amendments / updates)
The Accession Register notes that 1905.458-459 were from 'Stoney' and bought from 'Robert Chapman, Bottisham Lode'. The label affixed to the axe reads 'Stoney, 1904 (near Bottisham, C.)'. However, the catalogue card for Z 15344/1905.458 flips this, noting 'purchased from Robert Chapman of Stoney' and listing that it was from Bottisham. It seems probable that this was in error, and the information given in the Accession Register is correct. 'Stoney' does not appear in the maps, and is most likely to be 'Stonea', which is not particularly close to Bottisham Lode, so it may have been a mistake when the writer of the object label referred to it as 'near Bottisham', conflating the findspot with the address of Chapman. The Place field, based on the catalogue card, previously read 'Bottisham' but it has now been changed to 'Stonea'.
