Context (Analysis)
This skull was purchased from local coprolite diggers by the Rev. Conybeare around 1880. It was said to be the skull of a Bronze Age wolf, with the arrow that killed it still lodged in its skull. Radiocarbon tests carried out in 2012 date the skull to 1502 AD and Professor Tony Legge concluded the skull was of a dog. He also examined the 'wound' and concluded that it was made using a metal tool. The arrowhead is believed to be authentic. In all likelihood, it was the coprolite diggers who cut the slot in the skull and added the arrowhead, to increase the sale price. See Professor Legge's unpublished report in the archive (Doc.387) for further details.
