Description

Globular bowl of sheet copper alloy with everted rim and two integrated, pierced triangular tabs ('ears') for suspension. A large section of the base is missing, and there are copper alloy tabs inserted through slits indicating a contemporary repair. Reconstructed from fragments using resin.

Description (Physical description)
Catalogue card for Z 18048: 'Bowl with 2 triangular ears. Complete but badly damaged, particularly in the lower parts. The base has been mended with a patch (this is missing) in antiquity, - apparentally roughly rivetted on with ?folded sheet-metal clips, through oblong slit holes.'

Context (Found together / assemblage)
As noted by Jenkinson in PCAS, vol. 5(2): 'When this basin was lifted afterwards, a layer of bracken fern, on which it had been laid, was clearly visible, some of the fronds having been preserved by the superincumbent metal. A photograph was taken, but was not very successful.'

From Jenkinson's excavation notebook (GO3/5/1), page headed September 19: 'About 18 inches NE of the bucket occurred a bronze basin ([blank] in. across [blank] in. deep) with flat rim and two ears for handles, perfect enough except the bottom which was much destroyed.'

NB. This grave is not explicitly given a number, but the notes for it lie between Grave 55 and Grave 57.
