Context (Acquisition Details)
'Since given with the main Ransom Collection'. [The Ransom deposit was permanently given to the museum in 1923, but it doesn't seem that this axe was assigned a new 1923 idno at that stage. 19/4/2023 Imogen Gunn]

Context (Amendments / updates)
This axe was deposited by Francis Ransom in 1921, and assigned the deposit number D 1921.R.13 (the 'R' for Ransom) presumably to distinguish it from a separate 1921 deposit by Joseph Beldam which were given very similar numbers, including D 1921.B.13 (the 'B' for Beldam). This understandably caused confusion and at some stage they were instead assigned the suffix /Record 1 and /Record 2 to distinguish them from each other (e.g. D 1921.13/Record 2). The decision was taken to assign each a new suffix, where the Ransom axe becomes D 1921.13 A and the Beldam vessel becomes D 1921.13 B.
