Description (CMS Description)
The name can be read as Rachel Mahaffy, sister of Arthur William Mahaffy, a colonial officer, who held various posts in the Pacific between 1895 and 1914, including Deputy Commissioner of the Solomon Islands, Colonial Secretary of Fiji, and Resident Commissioner of the Ellice and Gilbert Islands. The National Museum of Ireland holds his collection of over 470 objects, but Rachel also tried to interest MAA in purchasing the material (see uncatalogued letters and for example, OA1/1/3). The collection includes gifts from influential Islanders and European residents, from Fiji, Samoa, Ellice and Gilbert Islands, though the majority is from the Solomon Islands. The Dublin address and the reference to the inlaid club and shell decorated 'heads' also back up this attribution.
