Description (CMS Description)
Engraving representing 'Prince Giolo', a Miangas islander named Jeoly, purchased as a slave by William Dampier in Mindanao (Philippines) in 1690. Jeoly was brought back to England and exhibited in London. He died of small pox in Oxford in 1693. A fragment of his skin was removed and preserved for the Anatomy School collections at Oxford University (lost in the early 20th century).

Engraving: " Prince Giolo" son to the King of Moangis or Giolo: lying under the Equator in the longitude of 152 degrees 30 min.- show designs painted over his whole body. Engraving is by F. Savage. c 38x 28 cm.
