Description
Document - Charcoal, pastel and paint drawing of Malu ceremony in the Torres Strait, drawn by A. C. Haddon.
According to Anita Herle in the 'Cambridge and the Torres Strait: Centenary Essays on the 1898 Anthropological Expedition' (1998): "With Haddon's encouragement it was decided to use the masks in a re-enactment of the cimax of the Malu ceremony, the dance performance in which the senior mentor (zogo-le) uttered the sacred words and sand the chant about Malu in front of the initiates (kersi). This staged performance was illustrated by Haddon and recorded in a short film sequence, although unfortunately, because of equipment failure, only a few tantalising minutes of footage exist. (p.92)."
