Description

“Magiti, Waikava, 1876.” [von Hügel's annotation] [The Namosi locality given in the large later caption is incorrect].

F.H. Dufty photograph of preparations for a magiti or feast at Waikava, Fawn Harbour, east of Savusavu on the south coast of Vanualevu, where the bosevakaturaga or council of chiefs was summoned by Sir Arthur Gordon, the governor, in November 1876.
The offering here is baked pigs, which have been cooked, gutted but otherwise whole, in the lovo, or pit ovens. Good examples of Christian men’s everyday dress of the time.
