Description

A container made from half of a calabash, hemispherical in shape. The exterior is decorated with carvings that have been coloured white, possibly through chalk. They depict animals and mythical creatures, such as a unicorn, lion and butterfly. These are surrounded by plants, geometric patterns and fine crosshatching. There are contemporary repairs along the edge of the vessel.

The only number on the catalogue card is 1900. Note on catalogue card in second handwriting reads: 'there is no firm indication that this is truly Asante'. Note in third handwriting in pencil reads 'Needs no' on item'. There is also a note in the first handwriting which reads 'Duplicate?'.

Added in different handwriting 'The design features two dogs, a ?snake, lion, unicorn, ?sesa bonsam, butterfly and ?fish around a tree with two ?chequered doors.''

This object was originally given the accession number 'No number 47'. In 2001 it was misidentified as corresponding with another gourd vessel and attributed the accession number '1951.810 B'. It has now been matched to this database record and a corresponding 1900 catalogue card and has been updated from 'No number 47' to 'TEMP.01332'.
