Description (CMS Description)
Large salt basket formed of a metal tin, complete with lid, encased in coconut palm leaf basketry. The top of the lid is covered by a disc of paper, cut from a newspaper or magazine (including an advertising for Kit-E-Kat cat food). Underneath the tin, the basketry forms an openwork grid. The bottom of the tin is marked in repoussé with the following: 'USE BEFORE OCT 23 1955. PACKED 23 2 55'. The weaving is much tighter around the body of the tin. At the top, the vegetable fibre threads are gathered in a bunch and curved down to form a loop. The loop is wound with very fine ?hibiscus fibre which are also used to keep the bunch in a loop shape.
