Description (CMS Description)
Yaqona bowl (tanoa) carved from a single piece of dark vesi wood. The bowl is circular and deep, with a distinctive orange-brown patina inside. The edges of the bowl have been wiped of the yaqona residue. The patina has flaked off in places. The lip is almost flat and shows 8 (possibly 9) circular marks obtained by burning the surface and often refers to as 'death marks' (these marks are likely to commemorate an event). One one side the bowl has a large crack which has been repaired with a tight binding of 3-ply plaited coir and resin. At the back, the bowl is provided with four cylindrical legs which seems to curve inward slightly. The legs are chipped in places (old) and one of them present a horizontal cut (intentional?). The surface at the back of the dish is very faceted which might indicate the use of stone tools. A large rectangular lug is placed under the bowl and perforated. To the lug is attached a thick tail of twisted 3-ply plaited coir cord reminiscent of the ones found on davui shell trumpets and terminating in a loop.
