Catalogue card 1 reads [stamped in black ink:] 'Z 3555 FIJI'. [typed:] 'Ngau Island. Fijian group. Basket, circular. On label: - Kato vutu Ocuvu, Gau May 1876 local form coconut leaf. Kato = basket, vutu = big. Ocuvu difficult to make out correct spelling, it may be the name of a village in Ngau Island.' [added in pencil:] 'K. Roth can give no explanation, he says "basket of hair" from Ngau island, CUVU might be spelt THUVU which, however, is a district in Nandronga province in V. L. and that is some distance from Ngau island.' [stamped in blue ink:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 14'. [stamped in red ink:] 'CUMAA 24 JUL 1987 TRANSCRIBED'. A small round red sticker pasted on the front of the card.

Description (CMS Description)
Round basket with high slightly out-curving sides, plaited from thin strips of natural coconut leaf. One lengths of 3-ply plaited coconut leaf are attached to the inside of the rim. The end of the plait is marked by the presence of a large knot inside the basket in the centre which also protrudes underneath the base. Flat base.
