Fergus Clunie notes: 'Coconut shell cups of this type were used by priests in the highlands of Western Vitilevu… the cup being stood on the spirithouse floor in a ring or wreath woven from coir sinnet, while the priest knelt to suck yaqona from it through a tube, not touching the cup with his hands (Clunie, Fergus. 1986. Yalo i Viti. Suva, Fiji Museum, p. 76).

Description (CMS Description)
Yaqona cup formed of a half coconut of a medium-brown colour provided with a woven coir handle. The inside of the cup has a yellow patina. The edge of the cup is pierced with 8 holes through which the coir handle is tied with 3-ply plaited coir. The handle forms a quarter of a circle. It is woven with 3-ply plaited coir into which have also been woven small white glass beads. The un-plaited ends of the woven handle form a bristly edge. A small cord of 3-ply plaited cord is woven into the edge of the handle in the middle. It may have served as a hanging cord but is not broken. On the back of the object, 'Z.3326' and '3968.' inscribed in white ink.
