Catalogue card 1 reads: [stamped in black ink:] 'Z 2771 [added in blue pen: 'A-J'] FIJI'. [typed:] Viti Levu. Ear ornaments of ivory, 9 in number, a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, j. Worn by the Kai Tholo, the people of the mountains and highly valued. (A) is worn by women, (e) is mostly found in use by the men of the upper part of the Wai ni Mala river. [stamped in black ink:] 'THE VON HÜGEL COLLECTION CIRCA 1875.' [added in blue pen:] '1923 H 118 - 125 + 1884 G 30' and 'Z 2771 F - 1884 G 30; this is probably a Gordon rather than Von Hugel piece. [added in black pen:] '(Centenary exhibition)'. [in pencil in the bottom left corner:] '1/192'. [stamped in blue ink in the bottom right corner:] 'SHOW CASE NUMBER 1'. A round red sticker pasted on the card.

Earlobe ornament carved from sperm whale teeth. The centre of the object is cylindrical. Both ends are carved with a notched ridge from which projects a conical point.
