Exhibition label from 1980s Clarke Gallery reads: 'Altar to the goddess Fortuna, dedicated by Virius Lupus, Imperial Propraetorian Legate (senior cavalry commander) upon the restoration of a bath-house destroyed by fire for the 1st Cohort of the Thracians (infantry auxiliaries from south-eastern Europe) by Valerius Fronto, cavalry prefect of the Vettonian Squadron (mounted auxiliaries from Spain), AD 197. Bowes, County Durham.'

Collingwood and Wright translation of inscription reads: 'To the goddess Fortune Virius Lupus, imperial propraetorian legate, restored this bath-house, burnt by the violence of fire, for the First Cohort of Thracians; Valerius Fronto, calvary prefect of the Calvary Squadron of Vettonians, had charge of the work.'
